🔥 Troubleshooting Guide: Suspect a Gas Leak? Here's What You MUST Do

A gas leak is nothing to take lightly—it can be dangerous to your health, your home, and your safety.
Natural gas is highly flammable, and even a small leak can lead to fire, explosion, or serious illness from prolonged exposure.
If you smell gas, hear a hissing sound, or feel lightheaded or nauseous, follow these steps immediately:

🚨 Step 1: Get Everyone to Safety

• Leave your home or building immediately.
• Don’t turn on or off any lights, appliances, or electronics—they can create a spark.
• Don’t use your phone inside the house. Wait until you are safely outside or a good distance away.
⚠️ If you’re inside and smell gas—get out fast.

✅ Step 2: Call 911 or Your Local Gas Utility

• Once you’re safely outside, call your local gas company’s emergency line or dial 911.
• Report the possible gas leak and follow their instructions.
• Do not re-enter your home until the utility or fire department has cleared it as safe.
📞 If you don’t know your gas provider's number, call emergency services first—they’ll help get the right response team involved.

✅ Step 3: Shut Off the Gas (If Safe and You Know How)

• If your gas meter is located outside and it’s safe to access, you can turn off the gas using a wrench:
o Turn the main valve a quarter turn until it’s perpendicular to the pipe (this means it’s off).
o Only do this if you’re trained or feel confident—it’s not always necessary if you’ve already left the house.
💡 If you're not sure—just leave. Your safety comes first.

✅ Step 4: Know the Signs of a Gas Leak

Even if you don’t smell gas, here are some common signs that could indicate a leak:
• Rotten egg or sulfur smell (this odor is added to natural gas for detection)
• Hissing or whistling sounds near gas lines or appliances
• Dead or discolored vegetation near gas pipes outdoors
• Bubbles in standing water or mud near a gas line
• Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, nauseous, or experiencing headaches
👃 If something feels off—trust your instincts.

✅ Step 5: After the Emergency, Call a Licensed Professional
